From Across the Pond

By Shannon Moriarity

This is Caitlin, Gateway Journal editor and writer of “Anywhere But Here.” If you read my column last issue, you know that my sister Shannon is doing an internship in London this summer. Here’s an e-mail she sent me, along with a great photo.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been in London for about a week and a half now but I’ve been soooo busy and haven’t had time to put up pics. I hope you all enjoy the ones I put up. I’m having a great time here in London. It’s absolutely beautiful and really fun!

Big Ben as seen from the London Eye.

I haven’t seen too many sights because this week I was busy interviewing for my internship. I start on Wednesday working for a small company called the Y-Club, which is basically a concierge service that takes care of social stuff for corporate clients and other really rich people, including some celebrities. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

But anyways, what I have seen of London is amazing! I am just amazed at how old the buildings are and how much history there is here. The castle that is in the pictures is Windsor Castle and it was incredible. We got to tour the inside but couldn’t take pics and I have never seen anything like it. Just tonight we went up in the London Eye, which is this big ferris wheel that goes really slow so you get a great view of the whole city. That’s what all of those last pics are.

The World Cup is going on right now so we went to a pub in this really busy area of the city on Saturday and watched the game. They get reallllly into “football” here. And don’t call it soccer because that’s basically a swear word here! England won and afterwards we went to Trafalgar Square and there was a riot going on. That’s what the pics of all the people dancing in the fountain are. It was so cool.

Like I said I haven’t done much sightseeing yet, but I’m flying to Ireland on Friday so I’ll get some good pics there. I have however, seen the inside of quite a few pubs. They are literally on every corner. And what I love about the pubs here is the beer is stronger! Not only that, but you can drink on the street here b/c there are no open container laws.

So I am having lots of fun and making some new friends. I will keep you all updated and please let me know how you all are doing. I want gossip! Well I love you all and keep an eye out for emails from me, and more pics.

Cheers!
Shannon
